Bjorn Egeli Herbjorn (Bjorn) Peter Egeli (15 November 1900〔(Cf. the churchbook of Vestfold county, Horten, Parish register (official) nr. 5 (1896-1904), Birth and baptism records 1901, page 85, no. 2 ).〕 – 20 October 1984)〔(SSDI ), SSN 220-38-2719.〕 was a Norwegian born, American portrait painter and maritime artist. ==Early life== Herbjorn Peter Egeli was born in Horten, Norway. He was the eldest of the three sons of Even Egeli (1874–1915) and Josefine ''Mathilde'' Wennerstrom (1875–1921).〔(Cf. the Norwegian national census 1910 ) (the youngest brother was born in 1910, cf. (Vestfold county, Horten, Parish register (official) nr. 6 (1905-1912), Birth and baptism records 1911, page 102, no. 25 )).〕 He had traditional schooling with additional art classes and wood-carving taught by his uncle, Hermann Ekeli (1885–1946) (the various family branches spelt the name either Ekeli or Egeli).〔Program from Smithsonian Exhibition in 1936 as well as newspaper interviews and family records.〕 Bjorn, who on his paternal grandfather's side descended from a family originating in Haukeli in Vinje, county of Telemark,〔Cf. ''Øykjelieslekta'', a genealogical survey by Gunnlaug Haugarne Stølen, published in ''Bygdemellom 2002'', pp. 5-19.〕 was not the first artist in his family. A great-great-uncle, Tor Sveinsen Øykjelie (1825–1882), was a well-known rosepainter who eventually emigrated to Wisconsin.〔In addition to ''Øykjelieslekta'': ''Norske Minnesmerker.
